I just wanted to see how I could work the word scuttlebutt into an actual post title….. today is that day.
It appears that the Independence Bowl is lusting after Alabama for a return trip to Shreveport, Louisiana:
But allow this question to be the starting point: Would the PetroSun Independence Bowl want the University of Alabama to make a return trip to Shreveport on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.?
“The answer is yes,” said Joe Darwin, the bowl’s chairman for 2007.
To me, this basically assures us of a Bowl game offer. If selected, we would either play Colorado or Texas A&M. Currently, it seems that the Buffalos are going to be making the trip to Shreveport. Of course, it depends on whether or not the Tide is grabbed up by the Music City Bowl or the Liberty Bowl:
Just because Alabama and South Carolina are 6-6, it doesn’t mean the Independence Bowl will simply choose between the two. The rules state that bowls such as the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl can choose a 6-6 team over a 7-5 team, provided that there is still an SEC bowl slot available for the 7-5 team.
That’s the fear of the Independence Bowl.
“Alabama may not be one of the ones we have a choice with,” Darwin said. “The Liberty Bowl or Music City Bowl, I’m sure, is saying, `We could take a 6-6 Alabama team we didn’t think would be available two or three weeks ago.'”
There are rumors that the Liberty Bowl would take Alabama, but that is purely speculation at this point. If we head to Memphis, we would play Central Florida, who gave some BCS teams a few tough games this season. I personally might take Shreveport to play a Big 12 team; more to gain and less to lose *sigh*.
