Et tu, Jimmy?

I’m not one to discuss recruiting all year long. There’s nothing wrong with it, but there are plenty out there who discuss it enough for you to get an idea of what’s going on. Having said that, I couldn’t help but notice one story about Alabama’s latest commitment, Barrett Jones of Memphis, Tennessee. Read the story HERE:

“I would be lying if I said that wasn’t a part of it,” Jones said Tuesday. “Even when you keep an open mind, that definitely is a factor. That’s what I grew up – an Alabama fan. That’s where my heart was.”

The heart, however, couldn’t outweigh the mind several months ago. When Alabama was led by coach Mike Shula, the Tide was low on Jones’ list.

“When Shula was there,” Jones said, “I had my mind set I was not going to Alabama. “

But, wait…. there is more. Jimmy Sexton – the superstar agent of Nick Saban, Tommy Tuberville, Phil Fulmer, and others – played a role in this as well:

Jones said his family was plenty excited when he broke the news. His father, Rex, played basketball for Alabama in the early 1980s.

Breaking the news to his close family friend and next-door neighbor, who just happens to be sports agent Jimmy Sexton wasn’t quite as easy.

Sexton, a former football manager at UT, has taken Jones to his Neyland Stadium luxury box to cheer on the Vols.

When asked what Sexton had to say about his commitment, Jones said, “No comment.”

This doesn’t really shock me. Jimmy Sexton seems like the kind of guy that will do whatever is in his best interest. But, I think this is a somewhat unethical for a sports agent if multiple clients are recruiting this kid and he tries to favor one over the other.

Oh well, it’s the way recruiting goes nowadays. Besides, worse stories have come out of Memphis.
